Should I go to the dentist if I am sick?

We love seeing our patients, however there are times when we do not want to see you. Patients need to reschedule appointments for a range of reasons. Did you know there are times when our dentists would prefer that you reschedule? It’s mostly related to illness.

If you are unwell, you can use the following information to make an informed decision about requesting to reschedule your appointment rather than attending. Remember we are only a phone call away, so if you are unsure, give us a call to discuss your symptoms.

We know you might have been waiting on your appointment day to arrive and taken time out of your busy schedule, however if you are experiencing any of the following, please give us a call preferably at least the day before your appointment.

How sick are you and are you contagious?

We  would prefer you rest at home if you have:

  • Gastroenteritis – gastro
  • Influenza – the flu
  • Herpes Simplex – cold sores
  • Other contagious diseases (chicken pox, measles, etc)

These are highly contagious conditions so it is best to stay at home and not infect others.

  • Common cold or simple respiratory conditions.

This is more about your comfort. If you are struggling due to congestion, coughing, sore throat, runny nose etc, having dental treatment can be quite uncomfortable. However, if you have the common cold or another simple illness and feel you could still attend your appointment, we will usually be able to provide your dental treatment.

Also

  • Under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs.

Although not an illness, our dentists can decline to provide treatment if you are under the influence of alcohol or any illicit drugs. You may not be in a position to consent to dental treatment due to the impairment caused by these substances.

Rescheduling your dental appointment

If you are not feeling well, call at the earliest opportunity so we can discuss your symptoms and make a mutually agreeable decision to either keep your appointment or reschedule. The earlier you can do this, the sooner we can offer the appointment space to another patient who is on our waiting list.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
